I began my research for this proposal by riding the M train to the stop at Fresh Pond Road, exiting the station and walking back towards the Forest Avenue stop and then continuing on to the station at Seneca Avenue. I wound my way back through each destination by meandering down side-streets, passing Polish, Hispanic, and Italian eateries, mom and pop stores, markets, and bodegas while taking plenty of photographs and copious amounts of notes. For larger images: Fullscreen Seneca Avenue Train Station: For me, the most visibly unifying aspect of the multi-ethnic enclave that is Ridgewood, Queens was the handsome brick row houses aligning many of the streets I passed. The 8 mezzanine windows of the Seneca Avenue Station are dedicated to these imposing yet beautifully crafted facades that provide well-preserved examples of architectural history. show. These illustrations are a continuation of the aesthetic language I employed for the "City Settlement" series, except where the site for those were vast abandoned landscapes, the site for these are dilapidated urban industrial facades. The crumbling and decayed surfaces of these buildings provide the foundation for a variety of intervening architectural devices.
